A Look Inside the Opening of "Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty"

For the next six months, the “Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty” exhibition will be taking place at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, paying homage to the mysterious and creative mind of the late designer. London was McQueen’s home and the heart of his inspiration, with the showing offering a more immersive experience than the exhibition that ran in New York City’s Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2011. The personal and intimate exhibition saw many of the designer’s close friends attend its opening in celebration of the storied creative, such as Philip Treacy, Sarah Burton, Kate Moss, Stella Tennant and David and Victoria Beckham. The exhibition features over 66 garments and accessories, from throughout McQueen’s iconic career. The retrospective is open now, and runs until August 2. Article source:...

What Will Meerkat Do Without Twitter?

That’s the danger of building on someone else’s platform. You never know when they’ll pivot into your business and steamroll you. Last night, that happened to Meerkat. The livestreaming app was built entirely on Twitter, piggybacking on it for identity, communication, and distribution. Yesterday morning, Twitter confirmed reports that it had acquired an unlaunched competing app called Periscope, which also allows public livestreams, but also private streaming and replays of old broadcasts. 10 hours later, Buzzfeed’s Matt Honan reported that Twitter was cutting off Meerkat’s access to the Twitter social graph. But Meerkat founder Ben Rubin tells me “the product is here to stay, the team is here to stay, and definitely the vision is here to stay.” If you’d rather watch what happens next, check out this recording of my Meerkat stream from an hour ago at a SXSW BBQ What Exactly Does “Cut Off” Mean? Previously, when you joined Meerkat, you’d sign up with your Twitter account, and Meerkat would have you automatically follow everyone you follow on Twitter. That way, when people you follow on Twitter start a stream, you’d get a push notification alerting you to watch, and you’d see their ongoing stream on the Meerkat home screen. Now Meerkat users must follow each other manually Now, anyone who joins Meerkat won’t get to auto-follow those they follow on Twitter. They’ll have to manually follow...

Ashton Kutcher And Guy Oseary Launch Sound Ventures, The Successor To A-Grade Investments

Most people probably know Ashton Kutcher for his success in television and film, but he’s not-so-quietly also become a pretty successful investor in startups as well. So successful, in fact, that Kutcher and investment partner Guy Oseary have convinced a group of limited partners to put money into a new fund called Sound Ventures. Tonight at SXSW, Kutcher and Oseary are launching the new fund with a party at the Copper Restaurant and Lounge in downtown Austin. By doing so, those two Hollywood types hope to show that they’re serious about investing in tech companies. Of course, Kutcher and Oseary aren’t new to that game. Through A-Grade Investments, they put money into such high-flying tech startups as Uber, Airbnb, and Spotify. They’ve also seen exits through the acquisition of investments such as Nest, SmartThings, and Socialcam, among others. But that was mostly seen as a hobby for the two. Now Kutcher and Oseary moving up to invest other people’s money — and will do so through a new, more formalized fund with some big backers. But with the new fund comes a slight change in leadership. Sources tell us Kutcher and Oseary will continue to lead all investment decisions at Sound Ventures, but Ron Burkle will no longer hold the general partner role. Burkle right-hand-man and fund manager Chris Hollod is also no longer a part of the inner...

Elon Musk Says Tesla Model S ‘Range Anxiety’ Will End With A Software Update

Elon Musk has teased something big coming from Tesla this week – an end to ‘range anxiety.’ The Model S (and every other electric vehicle), Tesla’s current flagship, has been known to inspire so-called range anxiety, wherein a driver spends a lot of time worrying about when they’ll next be able to get a full charge, and consequently don’t often drive anywhere near the upper limit of their battery’s range. Tesla press conf at 9am on Thurs. About to end range anxiety … via OTA software update. Affects entire Model S fleet. — Elon Musk (@elonmusk) March 15, 2015 Musk’s tweet promises more info a Thursday 9AM PT press conference around how a coming software update for the Tesla S will “end range anxiety.” The Tesla S has already accrued some impressive new abilities via software update, including an acceleration speed boost for its P85D. To fight range anxiety, Tesla has already invested in a network of high-speed supercharger stations across the U.S., and introduced a pilot program to test the feasibility of swapping out physical batteries in just a few minutes for around the cost of a tank of gas. This update could either be a way more intelligently manage the existing power available to Tesla S vehicles to significantly extend range, but it seems more like it will offer some improved way to deal with the existing limitations...
